I absolutely enjoy eating dumplings. Wang Xing Ji Restaurant at the Focus Plaza in San Gabriel, California has magnificent hand made dumplings, noodle soups, and wonton soups. As you can see from the video, my friend and I had the best table in the restaurant, because we were able to watch our food as it was being made to order.
At Wang Xing Ji, I recommend #9 Pork and Crab Soup Dumping. It’s a giant steamed soup dumpling. Yeah, this dumpling is asoup bomb of flavoras it is entertaining watching it being made. My friend and I spent the first five minutes trying to figure out how the heck we’re going to eat it. The straws are handy, because you could sip some of the soup from the dumpling. But wondered, “How the heck do we eat the filling without looking like a total slob?” Then we saw a guy from the next table transfer his gigantic soup dumpling onto a soup bowl after waiting a couple minutes for it to cool off. Duh!?!?!?
The menu at Wang Xing Ji is pretty basic. The noodle soups are all the same except for the side dish of your choice. However, the hand made wonton soups are extraordinary. I particularly enjoyed the Spicy Wonton Soup, which has a little bit of a heat in the clear broth.
On the other hand, if steamed dumplings are your niche, I suggest inviting a group of friends to dine with you at Wang Xing Ji. Family-style dining gives you an opportunity to try all their hand made dumplings on the menu without pigging out by yourself. The most flavorful dumplings on the menu were the Pork & Crab Dumplings and the Pork Dumpling without the added sweetness. Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the tasty steamed Fish Dumplings, which were just as delectable. I think that the dough and unique combinations of ingredients makes these dumplings spectacular. In fact, “made fresh” is always good.
Like the dumplings at Din Tai Fung in Arcadia or those scrumptious ones at Mama’s Lu Dumplings in Monterey Park, the dumplings at Wang Xing Ji Restaurant are as authentic as they come considering this restaurant chain from Shanghai, China has a long history of cooking for the masses for almost 100 years. With a long history, you know that the food is a guaranteed good! So, bring your friends and your family members for a dining experience to remember, because this ain’t your typical dim sum joint.
Note this establishment is gets crowded so allow for a wait time or make sure that you sign-in on the waiting list.
